Regional Feed Barometer
A critical component in maximizing the profitability of beef feeding programs is being able to identify feeds that provide the required nutrients at a good price. These reports are a good tool for that. They provide estimates of feed values based on the feeds' nutrient content and current market prices, and independent of any reference feeds such as corn or soybean meal.

Perspective on Beef Feed Markets & Nutrient Costs February 2012 Joanne Knapp, Ph.D. PAS
Wheat midd prices were down substantially in many markets, which is common at this time of the year, but not in Texas. Whole cottonseed and cottonseed meal prices were also down quite a bit. Corn gluten feed (dry and wet), distillers grains (wet, modified wet, and dry), and hominy are good bargains in all regions. Cottonseed hulls, soyhulls, molasses, rolled barley, rolled sorghum and alfalfa hay are over-priced in all regions. Steam-flaked corn, dry-rolled corn, and rolled wheat were all break-even in the South Central region. In the East Central and North Central regions, steam-flaked corn and rolled wheat are break-even, while dry-rolled corn was over-priced. Keep in mind that you cannot formulate a balanced diet using these reports alone. The “bargain” feeds represent savings opportunities and can be utilized in rations to reduce feed costs within the limitations of providing a balanced nutrient supply to the beef animal, while the use of “over-priced” feeds should be minimized. Prices represent wholesale commodity prices, and generally do not include freight or added value from a feed manufacturer. |
